Firefox 3.6 released January 21st, 2010

After months of testing, Mozilla has finally released Firefox 3.6, the newest version of its popular browser. The new edition of Firefox sports a new array of features, least of which is an increase in speed — 20% faster than Firefox 3.5, according to Mozilla. It uses Gecko 1.9.2 web-rendering, which improves its load times, startup speeds, etc.

Firefox 3.6  is built on Mozilla's Gecko 1.9.2 web rendering platform, which has been under development since early 2009 and contains many improvements for web developers, add-on developers, and users. This version is also faster and more responsive than previous versions and has been optimized to run on small device operating systems such as Maemo.

Notable Firefox 3.6 features include:

    * Available in more than 70 languages - get your local version.
    * Support for a new type of theme called Personas, which allow users to change Firefox's appearance with a single click.
    * Protection from out-of-date plugins to keep users safer as they browse.
    * Open, native video can now be displayed full screen and supports poster frames.
    * Improved JavaScript performance, overall browser responsiveness, and startup time.
    * The ability for web developers to indicate that scripts should run asynchronously to speed up page load times.
    * Continued support for downloadable web fonts using the new WOFF font format.
    * Support for new CSS attributes such as gradients, background sizing, and pointer events.
    * Support for new DOM and HTML5 specifications including the Drag & Drop API and the File API, which allow for more interactive web pages.
    * Changes to how third-party software can integrate with Firefox in order to prevent crashes.

Developers can find out about all the changes and new features at the Mozilla Developer Center.

  • Trying to make payment at HDB.gov.sg; couldn't believe that it only works with Internet Explorer (Chrome no, Firefox no)

  • I MIGHT consider moving back to FF for personal use if the speed has indeed increased. Chrome is just too slick!

  • I'm already installed, improved great speed and smoother peformance, can operate HTML 5. But few add-on could not work properly (hope it just temporary). Personas (new) it just like G.Chrome, no need to intalled themes and can undo.
Overall it great to used immediately, lol.

  • Not visible here yet (Guernsey / UK). Hopefully the auto update will pick it up tomorrow. Just updated my beta 3.6 to 3.7 yesterday - looked like good timing by me.

Most addon's are meant to be working already.

@Stephen. Personas are now part of the Firefox core program, no addon needed to use them.

  • Firefox is hands down the definitive solution when it comes to web browsers. It is quite simply the fastest, most powerful and most secure web browser on the market and the wide array of extensions continue to add great features.

  • I'm sure many are excited to see the Firefox 4.0 now! Hopefully they will do something about its JS loader to make FF speed at par with Chrome now.Hopefully, the firefox geeks have a remedy for that.
